About the program
Program objectives
Orthotics and prosthetics technicians work mainly in public institutions of the health and social services network, in private orthotics and prosthetics laboratories or in foot orthotics clinics. Their work mainly involves evaluating patients with one or several physical disabilities to determine if they require orthoses or prostheses, designing and making these devices, adjusting and modifying them as needed, fitting patients and delivering devices.
Orthotics and prosthetics technicians require a variety of skills to carry out their required duties:
communication and personal support skills in order to be able to work with those who have physical disabilities (at times, very serious disabilities)
problem-solving skills and the ability to come up with solutions, invent and create (when designing devices)
excellent manual dexterity to ensure the desired precision, finish and esthetics
mnemonic skills for making devices.
With experience, orthotics and prosthetics technicians can be promoted to laboratory manager or run their own laboratory.
After obtaining their Diploma of College Studies, orthotics and prosthetics technicians can specialize in a specific area of orthotics and prosthetics. They can also pursue post-collegial or university studies in fields such as bionics, biomedical engineering, rehabilitation or related sectors.
