About the program
Program objectives
This program trains individuals to work as denturists. Their work mainly involves designing and fabricating removable prostheses adapted to patients with complete or partial tooth loss based on data they have gathered themselves during patient examinations. As such, the work of denturists alternates between patient examinations, fabrication operations conducted in the laboratory, establishing a treatment plan and fitting patients with their prostheses. Considering that the decisions they make directly impact the health of their patients, they have a high level of responsibility.
Main tasks
Greet patients at their offices. Analyze and evaluate the functional and esthetic needs of patients.
Establish treatment plans. Take impressions and measurements required for the fabrication of removable dentures. Fit patient with dentures (verify esthetic, functional and phonetic aspects).
Fabricate and repair removable dentures. Create moulds. Fit patients with finished dentures and adjust as required.
Make individual impression trays.
Make, repair and adjust skeletal frameworks for removable dentures.
Perform all laboratory duties related to the fabrication of dentures. Sterilize and maintain dental equipment. Reline, rescale and repair dentures.
Can open and manage their own denturist clinics.
Career opportunities
Denturists work independently with a mostly adult clientele. They must also work in collaboration with other health professionals: dentists, dental hygienists, oral surgeons, dental technicians, physicians, etc. They work in private practices, in partnership with other denturists, in polyclinics or in public institutions.
To practise their profession, denturists must be members of the Ordre des denturologistes du Québec.
