About the program
Program objectives
The Fire Safety program trains individuals to become firefighters capable of working in agglomerations with high population densities as well as in city centres with major industrial parks having unique geographical characteristics that require firefighters to adapt the manner in which they respond to incidents.
Fighting advanced fires
The increased complexity of mechanical systems in institutional and industrial buildings, the introduction of new construction standards, the new combustion-triggering phenomena that comes with the creation of new materials, the need to rescue people from densely populated high-rise buildings in addition to facilities and industrial complexes likely to contain dangerous goods are a few examples of the situations the graduates of this program are trained to deal with.
Fire prevention As part of their interventions aimed at reducing the risk and occurrence of fires, these individuals may be called upon to help create intervention plans, help educate the public and survey various types of buildings within the territory they are servicing. Overall, a large part of their duties consists of identifying situations that pose a threat to fire safety. Crisis intervention Firefighters intervene in a variety of emergency situations other than fires and medical emergencies. For example, in the event of a disaster, they would be called upon to intervene along with various other authorities. In such situaitons, each group of professionals plays a distinct, complementary and concerted role, which ultimately impacts the manner in which such situations are handled. Risks in these situations are quite diverse in nature—social risks, natural disasters, and technology-related incidents, for example—and require a completely different outlook on civil security. Interventions as first responders In emergency situations that require rapid intervention, first responders must provide the primary care that is required. These interventions must be carried out in keeping with established clinical protocol until ambulance technicians arrive and are able to take over. As part of their duties, firefighters must act as first responders in any situation where care is required.
N.B. This DEC is required in order to obtain a position in any major city throughout Quebec.
